5.1 (five speakers + subwoofer) remains the sweet spot for living rooms — dialogue clarity, surround effects, sensible cost. 7.1 adds rear precision in larger rooms. Dolby Atmos (e.g. 5.1.2 or 7.2.4) adds height speakers for overhead effects and is genuinely transformative in a dedicated room — but only when the room is treated acoustically.
